Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy is an evidence-based, compassionate approach to psychotherapy that views the mind as naturally composed of multiple “parts,” each with its own perspective, emotions, and role. Rather than seeing these parts as problems, IFS understands them as protective and purposeful—even when their strategies create distress.
At the heart of IFS is the Self, the essential core of every person that is inherently whole, undamaged, and capable of healing. The Self is not another part—it is the grounded, steady presence within that embodies qualities such as calm, curiosity, clarity, compassion, confidence, courage, creativity, and connectedness (often referred to as the “8 C’s”). In IFS, the Self is the natural leader of the internal system.
Healing occurs as individuals learn to access and trust this Self-energy. From this centered state, the Self can gently approach each part with openness and understanding, rather than judgment or fear. As parts feel seen, heard, and valued by the Self, they begin to relax their protective roles and release the burdens they carry. This allows the entire internal system to reorganize in a more balanced, harmonious way.
Along with the Self, IFS identifies three primary types of parts:
- Exiles: Often carry emotional pain, trauma, or wounds from past experiences.
- Managers: Work proactively to maintain control and prevent painful feelings from surfacing.
- Firefighters: React when distress breaks through, often using impulsive or numbing behaviors to soothe or distract.
Through guided awareness and inner dialogue, IFS helps individuals strengthen their connection to the Self and build trusting relationships with their parts. Rather than suppressing or eliminating parts, the goal is for the Self to lead—creating internal safety, integration, and resilience.
Widely used for trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship challenges, IFS offers a respectful and empowering framework for healing—one that centers the Self as the primary agent of transformation and honors the innate wisdom within each person.
